  1. Bad Dad

My father’s parents barely spoke English. Particularly his father, Abraham, who got out of Poland rather then die in a pogrom or Nazi camp, and came here to earn $16/week in a bakery. (He was NOT a bagel baker – they earned more! – or so my Bad Dad would always remind us.) My father, Samuel Benjamin Mutterperl, would later change his surname to Perl. His older brother was a science and math genius who also changed his surname. Dad was the ultimate assimilationist Jewish type, but he was also extremely narcissistic. Such deep wells of insecurity, all covered up with pride and one-upmanship. His own Bad Dad was a contributing factor, no doubt. Passing the torch of darklight….

Lyrics

You were so bad
Alone inside
You got so mad,
I could not hide

Behind a wall
That would not fall
Behind a gate
Made of self hate

You could not feel your inner pain
Instead you let your anger rain down

So bad, so bad
So full of fear
So mad, so mad
You could not hear me

No sentiment
No tender ways
So hard to please
So faint of praise

Reject your roots
Assimilate
So really who were you?
Yours to create

Run from the past, and change your name
A shield from all that brings the shame down

So bad, so bad
So full of fear
So mad, so mad
You could not hear - me

So bad, so bad
So full of fear
So mad, so mad
You could not hear me (and I could not feel your love)
